Fear not, the system log is your friend.
The system log is simply there to give you an overview of what is happening with your server, full understanding is not necessary.
If you are concerned about an entry paste it into google, after a while you will get used to it, I have (it took me a while).
These days I am always checking the system log.
You will be surprised how quick you start to learn what everything means.
At the end of the day if you have got a server up and running you are already a bit of a Linux expert, if you know windows you will adapt to Linux quite quickly.
